Best Entertaining Activities To Keep You Sane
With all the pressure of family, jobs, and school, it’s easy to feel like you’re going insane from the stress of everyday life. While it’s important to take things in stride, you shouldn’t ignore how you feel either. One way to combat your overwhelming anxiety and stress is by taking part in entertaining activities that allow you to unwind and relax without feeling guilty about it. This post will discuss some of the best entertaining activities that can help get your life back on track.
Cooking (with loved ones, preferably)
Cooking together is a lot of fun, and offers plenty of opportunities for laughter, teaching and learning. Plus, you get to eat (hopefully) delicious food at the end of it! For example, if your family enjoys Italian food, try whipping up some homemade pasta sauce one night. It may take a few tries to nail down your recipe (don’t worry—you won’t be alone), but if you stick with it long enough, your family will start calling you Nana in no time! If hosting an entire dinner party seems too intimidating—or time-consuming—consider creating menus for meals and buying snacks from local markets; your guests can help themselves before sitting down for a full meal with appetizers on display.
Playing games with kids
One of my favorite ways to entertain my children is by playing games with them. We have a lot of fun and they learn so much while we’re having fun together. I think board games are particularly entertaining, as we get to play outside (usually with friends) and enjoy more than just time in front of a screen. We also love card games, like Uno, War, or even poker! Some kids have their own favorites that they like you to play with them – it might be a video game, or reading them a book – but there are so many different options!
Watching a movie (it doesn’t even have to be new!)
Sitting down with your family or friends and watching a movie is a great way to unwind after a long day. And because we’re obsessed with pop culture, you can find movies that are perfect for every occasion. Just remember: don’t eat while you watch TV! Many of us love snacking while we catch up on our favorite shows.
Reading a book (okay, maybe it does have to be new!)
Reading a book is one of life’s great pleasures and it is also one of life’s great hobbies. There is nothing like curling up with a good book and getting lost in someone else’s story. Read every night before bed, or curl up in a comfy chair with a cup of tea when you have some quiet time, but get back into reading! When there are no more books to read by your favorite author, try reading something different that interests you; make sure it does not contain anything objectionable (i.e., sex or violence).
Playing with pets
Just as much as they help you feel better, pets can be a source of comfort during times of stress. Caring for a pet can be incredibly relaxing, even if it’s just taking out their litter box and giving them fresh water. And when you’re spending time with a pet, your mind isn’t completely absorbed in your worries; instead, you have something else on which to focus, whether it’s watching over an energetic puppy or listening to kitty purr while in your lap. The effect is not only calming but also therapeutic.
Housecleaning (gasp!)
This is more of a preventative exercise than an entertaining one, but it's still worth mentioning. A good cleaning session helps you de-stress and keeps you focused on getting your life in order so that you have time for what matters most. Plus, a clean house just feels better. As with other hobbies, cleaning can be part of your meditation practice or whatever routine you choose to follow every day (see below). A weekly deep clean will do wonders for keeping your mind organized, as well as help keep allergy season at bay. If vacuuming isn't quite your style, try going outdoors and raking leaves or clearing snow from your driveway—the fresh air and physical activity will be good for both your body and mind.
Cleaning your home. Again. Yes, it can be entertaining.
Many of us choose to clean our homes as a way of relaxing and entertaining ourselves. It’s an activity that seems productive—however, you can often spend more time cleaning than actually getting things done. While I agree that keeping your home clean is important, you should limit how much time you spend on it; there are other, more effective ways to entertain yourself and relax at home.
